Vascular lesions of the head and neck: an update on classification and imaging review

Abstract: Vascular lesions have a varied appearance and can commonly occur in the head and neck. A majority of these lesions are cutaneous and congenital; however, some may be acquired and malignant. The presentation and clinical history of patients presenting with head and neck lesions can be used to guide further imaging, which can provide important diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. This review discusses the revised International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) classification system for va… Show more

“…The diagnosis of OVAs was established based on clinical criteria and on the history of the anomaly according to Mulliken and Glowacki ( 13 ) using the latest classification for vascular anomalies approved by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies workshop ( 14 ). Functional or esthetic criteria were used for treatment indication.…”

“…The ISSVA as well as the WHO classification of soft tissue tumours distinguishes between benign vascular tumours, locally aggressive or low metastatic risk intermediate malignant vascular tumours, and malignant vascular tumours [ 55 , 57 , 65 ]. Some of these tumours preferentially affect the hand (Table 5 ).…”

“…Vascular anomalies have the greatest frequency in the head and neck areas and are often encountered in children (1,2). An accurate minimally invasive treatment of this condition is particularly important, considering the predominant age group, the potentially severe complications and debilitating sequelae.…”

“…According to the classification of vascular anomalies issued by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA), two main types of lesions make up this category -vascular tumors (including hemangiomas) and vascular malformations (comprising high-flow and lowflow lesions, as simple or combined malformations) (1,(3)(4)(5). The treatment options for vascular anomalies consist mainly of medication, sclerotherapy, embolization, laser therapy and surgical removal.…”
