Vascular homeostasis in atherosclerosis: A holistic overview

Abstract: Atherosclerosis refers to the deposition of lipids and the co-existence of inflammation and impaired inflammation resolution in pan-vasculature, which causes lumen narrowing, hardening, plaque formation, and the manifestation of acute cardiovascular events. Emerging evidence has suggested that vascular circulation can be viewed as a complex homeostatic system analogous to a mini-ecosystem which consists of the vascular microenvironment (niche) and the crosstalk among phenotypically and functionally diverse vas… Show more

“…Figure 6 provides a protein network-centered view of Table 4 and shows that proteins regulating vitamin D's non-genomic pharmacology can physically interact and affect atherosclerosis by regulating the balance between autophagy ( 121 ), apoptosis ( 122 ), endoplasmic reticulum stress response ( 94 ), cellular senescence ( 123 , 124 ), and tissue homeostasis ( 125 ).…”

“…Several typical phenomena of endotheliosis can be identified, and it is important to note that normal interactions between ECs, blood plasma cells and proteins, other arterial cells, and the subendothelial extracellular matrix are inevitably disrupted in this condition. Therefore, the dysfunction of ECs cannot be isolated a priori when analyzing these phenomena [281].…”

“…The naringenin-7-O-glucoside in the traditional Chinese medicine dracocephalum rupestre protects against cardiovascular disease [81]. Figure 4: Quercetin, a compound found in tea, wine, apples, and onions and used to treat cardiovascular disease [82]. The risk of cardiovascular disease decreases with increased quercetin consumption.…”
