Vascular health and cognitive function in older adults with cardiovascular disease

Abstract: Background-We hypothesized that changes in vascular flow dynamics resulting from age and cardiovascular disease (CVD) would correlate to neurocognitive capacities, even in adults screened to exclude dementia and neurological disease. We studied endothelial-dependent as well as endothelial-independent brachial responses in older adults with CVD to study the associations of vascular responses with cognition. Comprehensive neurocognitive testing was used to discern which specific cognitive domain(s) correlated to… Show more

“…IL-2 in particular, could affect endothelial function through increasing blood brain barrier permeability. Unlike other cytokines, IL-2 does not require a saturable transport system to cross the blood brain barrier (Forman, 2008). Thus, IL-2 levels can accumulate more quickly in the brain compared to other cytokines, causing more damage to endothelial cells.…”

“…An additional goal of this study was to determine the relationship between M268T and cognition given the established relationship between vascular deterioration and cognitive difficulties [7173]. Several studies have reported cognitive difficulties among individuals with cardiovascular conditions, independent of a vascular dementia diagnosis [74].…”

“…In particular, excess adipose tissue has negative vascular and metabolic consequences on the body, including increased risk for atherosclerotic heart disease and Type II diabetes (Sharma and Chetty, 2005). Moreover, declines in vascular health lead to executive cognitive dysfunction (e.g., Forman et al, 2008), further supporting the potential role of vascular mechanisms in obesity-cognition associations. One major pathway by which obesity, especially central adiposity, can engender risk for heart disease is through associations with elevated blood pressure (e.g., Krauss et al, 1998).…”
