Vascular anatomy of the thenar eminence: its relevance to a pedicled or free thenar flap

Abstract: Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the arterial supply of the skin covering the prominent part of the thenar eminence in order to (Folia Morphol 2017; 76, 2: 232-238)

“…Despite a large number of articles presenting anatomical characteristics of superficial and deep palmar arches, some palmar arteries were only partially described, for example, the thenar arteries coming from the anatomical snuff-box portion of RA. This is obviously true for the SPB of the RA, which was in previous reports only mentioned as a part of SPA [2,5,13,14,23,26].…”

“…Our original contribution to the morphometric and topographic classification of the SPB into two groups was a result of a more detailed analysis of the SPB itself, then in a previous observation of the thenar eminence blood supply [26]. Measuring the calibres and comparing the frequency of well-developed SPBs in our present series of 35 corrosion casts, which was 31.4%, with the earlier incidence of 40% of prominent SPB in 30 human hands, no statistically significant difference was found (χ 2 with Yates correction 0.212, two-tailed p = 0.6453), confirming and supporting our methodological approach.…”

“…Hamahata et al [ 16 ] stated that anastomosis using radial recurrent artery vessels is recommended as a strategy in free radial forearm transplantation for salvage operations. The superficial palmar branch of the radial artery can be also used in plastic and reconstructive surgery as the radial artery superficial palmar branch perforator flap [ 50 52 ]. Our present findings indicate that the prominent superficial palmar branch contributed to the formation of superficial palmar arch more often when the brachioradial artery occurred.…”

“…Knowledge of the anatomical variations of the arterial supply of the hand, including variability of the superficial palmar arch, is of crucial significance for safe and successful hand surgeries [4649]. In the study of Rodríguez-Niedenführ et al [12], the PMA supplied the hand by joining the superficial palmar arch (35% of cases with palmar type of the PMA) or by forming some of the common palmar digital arteries (65% of cases presenting palmar type of the PMA).…”
