Vascular Aging in Rodent Models: Contrasting Mechanisms Driving the Female and Male Vascular Senescence

Abstract: Increasing scientific interest has been directed to sex as a biological and decisive factor on several diseases. Several different mechanisms orchestrate vascular function, as well as vascular dysfunction in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in males and females. Certain vascular sex differences are present throughout life, while others are more evident before the menopause, suggesting two important and correlated drivers: genetic and hormonal factors. With the increasing life expectancy and aging populati… Show more

“…Most of the resources, now, also have shown that not all the model systems are exactly suitable to study CS in various conditions, disease states and cell/tissue types. For that reason, it is suggested that, instead of choosing one single model, the combination of the results from various models would provide a better understanding of this complex phenomena ( Barros et al, 2021 ). While there are several studies on alternative aging models such as NMR and BMR, there is no sufficient data to fully understand how these unique species adapt CS mechanisms to achieve healthy aging.…”

“…This result is supported by the interaction effect of diet and offspring age and requires further investigation. In addition, unique mechanisms drive vascular senescence in males and females [102], so our results may be obscured by our study of exclusively female mice. Another interesting result from our study is the signi cance of the coronary artery velocity (S/D) ratio in 11.5month-old offspring.…”
