Various Types of Facial-Angular Artery-Based Flaps for Reconstructing Oral and Maxillofacial Defects Following Cancer Ablation

Abstract: Background:The flap based on the facial-angular vessels (FAVs) has several names and cannot capture the hemodynamics. Aims: This study was performed to assess the reliability of various types of flaps based on the FAVs for reconstructing oral and maxillofacial defects following cancer ablation. Patients and Methods: Forty-three oral and maxillofacial defects were reconstructed with facial-angular artery island flaps (FAAIF, n = 14), including V-Y advancement-type and rotationtype flaps based on FAVs and revers… Show more

“…After completely removing necrotic bones and infected soft tissue, it is necessary to cover the partial defects in the mandible with a pedicled ap, such as a buccal fat pad ap, 15 myofascial ap, 16 facialangular artery island aps (nasolabial ap), 17,18 or FSAIF (submental island ap). 19 It is believed that for progressive MROM, hemi-mandibulectomy to subtotal mandibulectomy with an adequate margin from the necrotic bone is necessary, followed by deployment of a well-designed bular free ap.…”
