O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar um aparelho desenvolvido para a determinação da gravidade específica (GE) do ovo em água, comparando-o ao método de imersão em solução salina. Foram coletados 200 ovos de duas linhagens de poedeiras comerciais, divididos ao acaso em dois grupos de 50 ovos por linhagem e submetidos a duas seqüências de determinação da GE. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os métodos utilizados. A determinação da GE dos ovos utilizando o aparelho desenvolvido pode ser realizada com a mesma precisão da determinação em solução salina.

“…Although feed intake was not statistically different among treatments, there was a trend of feed intake to decrease as dietary Ca levels increased (Table 3); if determined: specific gravity, eggshell percentage, eggshell weight per surface area, yolk color, yolk percentage, albumen percentage, albumen height, yolk height, egg weight, and Haugh units. Eggshell weight per surface area (EWSA) was expressed in mg/ cm², according to Abdallah et al (1993), and obtained using the formula: EWSA = {EsW/[3.9782 x (EW 0.7056 )]} x 1000, where: EsW = eggshell weight, EW = egg weight. Haugh units were determined applying the formula: HU = 100 log (H + 7.57 -1.7 W 0.37 ), where: H = albumen height (mm) and W = egg weight (g).…”

This study evaluated the effect of dietary calcium levels and limestone particle size distribution on first-cycle layer performance and egg quality. A completely randomized experimental design in 4x3 factorial arrangement (four Ca levels -3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5%; and three limestone particle size distributions -100% fine, 50% fine and 50% coarse, 30% fine and 70% coarse) was applied, totaling 12 treatments with six replicates of eight birds each. The treatments did not influence the most of evaluated performance and internal and external egg quality parameters. However, limestone particle size distribution quadratically affected with percentage of defective eggs, with the lowest percentage obtained with the distribution 61.75% fine limestone and 38.25% coarse limestone. Increasing dietary Ca levels significantly increased eggshell weight per surface area and the percentage of Ca excreted in the feces. It was concluded that the combination of the highest dietary Ca level (4.5%) with 50% replacement of fine-particle limestone by coarse limestone results in better eggshell and increases the number of marketable eggs.

Thirty-six eggs were retired when the hens had 44 week of age and the other 36 eggs were retired eight weeks afterwards. Each group of 36 eggs was radomly divided in three groups of 12 eggs. First group was analyzed at once (storage system C); second one was kept during one week in the refrigerator (5ºC) (storage system R), and third group were kept also one week but on ambient temperature (25ºC) (storage system ET). The hen age, egg weight and storage system had not significant (P>0.05) effect on shell thickness. The specific gravity (SG) has a positive relation with shell quality.The egg class and storage system significantly (P<0,05) affected to SG, while no influence of bird age on this variable was observed. The yolk color increased with hen age but storage system had not effect on this variable. The increase of the hen age and the R and AT storage systems significantly (P<0.05) MACIEL, W.C. et al. The Haugh units (HU) was significantly (P<0.05) affected by hen age, egg class and storage system. The hen age increase reduced HU and the R and ET eggs had lower HU than C eggs.
