Varieties of Uncertainty in Health Care: A Conceptual Taxonomy

Abstract: Uncertainty is a pervasive and important problem that has attracted increasing attention in health care, given the growing emphasis on evidence-based medicine, shared decision making, and patient-centered care. However, our understanding of this problem is limited, due in part to the absence of a unified, coherent concept of uncertainty. There are multiple meanings and varieties of uncertainty in health care, which are not often distinguished or acknowledged although each may have unique effects or warrant dif… Show more

“…The uncertainty of what newly medicalized terminology may mean can be described as a lack of clarity, a sub-domain of quality of information, whereas an uncertainty of diagnosis would fall within the domain of probability-the perceived likelihood of a particular outcome or the presence of a range of possibilities (Babrow et al, 1998). The source of uncertainty can influence the impact of uncertainty on decision, as demonstrated by the divergent effects of uncertainty on ratings of self-reported careseeking urgency observed in this study and Hall et al (2010), and it is important to recognize the differences in the source of the uncertainty, in order to appropriately manage it (Han et al, 2011).…”

The specifics of the interlinking of the knowledge from the scientific investigation with all the different concerns and interactions can be achieved through a small multi-agency team which can identify and evaluate the different aspects of the technical risk assessment, the context and the stakeholder interests ( Figure 5).…”
