Varietal Discrimination of Pineapple (<i>Ananas comosus</i> L.) Using Chromatographic Fingerprints and Chemometrics

Abstract: Online solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatography (online SPE-LC) with diode array detector (DAD) was used to obtain the chromatographic fingerprint of bioactive compounds of pineapple (Ananas comosus L.). The extracts from 40 samples of three different varieties of pineapple (Morris, MD2, and Josaphine) were obtained using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) prior to separation using online SPE-LC. The SPE-LC method was optimized and validated and applied to 40 pineapple samples of those three varieties. Se… Show more

“…In the present day, chemometrics has been widely developed and used as a tool to help researchers simplify and interpret complex data. Implementation of chemometrics for authentication of herbal medicine in Southeast Asia performed well for the authentication of herbal medicines (Nurrulhidayah et al, 2011;Triyasmono et al, 2020), species classification (Khan et al, 2020;Rohaeti et al, 2015), origin determination (Braley and Hondrogiannis, 2020;Mercer et al, 2019), and activity related to quality determination (Kiani et al, 2019;Saidan et al, 2015;Wirasuta et al, 2017). The limitation of chemometrics was caused mainly by the limited data obtained.…”

“…Some examples of chemometric application for pineapples are the ripeness monitoring by analyzing aromatic compounds 24 (Figure 8), and by analyzing total soluble solid 25 , quality control of processed pineapples 26 , and product developments based on HPLC technique 27 . Moreover, the analysis method can be employed for genetic approach to identify pineapple cultivars 28,29 .…”
