Varicose veins: on the verge of discovering the cause?

Abstract: Varicose veins of the lower limbs are one of the most common and wide-spread pathology all around the world. What triggers the specific changes in a vein wall still remains unclear as well as what happens in the layers of the vein wall after the disease starts. The aim of the article is to analyze published data and results of researches on epidemiology, genetics, cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying varicose veins pathogenesis. It is now commonly accepted that vein wall changes in patients with varico… Show more

“…Anti-hypertensive effects of diosmin (namely, compromised NO-synthase inhibitor induced cardiac infarcts, hyaline arteriopathy and fibrinoid necrosis), presumably because of its activity in elimination of superoxide anions, were demonstrated in a rat model [43] . Peripheral arterial disease may also be treated with Sulodexide, which prevents cardiovascular events after myocardial infarction and exerts the relief of intermittent claudication [44] .…”

“…Given the lack of knowledge about the sDC-SIGN function, it is currently challenging to propose a mechanism for its involvement in VVs. However, since the inflammatory response is activated in VVs and is considered part of their pathogenesis [5][6][7][8]46,47], we can speculate that this potential link is related to inflammation.…”

“…A total of 80 participants, 40 with varicose veins and 40 without varicose veins were included in the study.Respondents who have been classified into case groups who have varicose veins and controls who do not will be searched for risk factors such as high BMI, prolonged standing, smoking habits, and family history of varicose veins using questionnaires. 7 The collected data will be processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows ver.26.0 program. The data distribution from both groups will be analyzed for correlation with risk factors using chi-square analysis.…”
