Variations of monsoon rainfall: A simple unified index

Abstract: A new objective approach is proposed to identify the seasonal cycle of rainfall for major monsoon regions of the globe. Mean sea level pressure and low-level zonal wind are combined to establish a standardized monsoon index. The index is able to determine the timing of the summer monsoon rainy season across all major monsoon regions in Asia-Australia, Africa, and the Americas. A detailed application of the index in detecting the monsoon onset-withdrawal phases is demonstrated for the Vietnam-South China Sea re… Show more

“…Omotosho (1992) and Omotosho et al (2000) considered that changes in both upper-air wind direction and surface equivalent potential temperature, which represents variations of moisture in the monsoon flow, herald rainy season onsets in West Africa. Other studies used either the change of prevailing winds (Holland, 1986), used combined wind-rainfall criteria (Hendon and Liebmann, 1990), or used combined wind-mean sea level pressure criteria (Nguyen et al, 2014b) to define monsoon onset dates. Li and Yanai (1996) and Mao et al (2004) have shown that the reversal of the meridional temperature gradient in the upper troposphere (200-500 mb) indicates the monsoon onset.…”

“…The last category combines dry-wet alteration and prevailing wind reversal, such as from the studies of Webster (1987), Qian et al (2002a), , Zhang and Wang (2008), and Qian and Tang (2010). As indicated recently by Nguyen et al (2014), some "spots" could not be detected by some definitions used local rainfall or zonal wind threshold of local difference between two calendar seasons of summer and winter. A spot in southern China also exists in our previous study using a rainfall of local precipitation difference between two calendar pentads 8 and 44 (Qian and Tang 2010).…”

“…Although the term of global monsoon domain has been proposed in many previous works using different indices, debates on whether such a global domain can be objectively determined still remain, as summarized by Wang and Wu et al (2008) and indicated recently by Nguyen et al (2014). By an annual precipitation range between local summer and winter, depicted a global monsoon domain.…”
