Variations of Microenvironments with and without SRB for Steel Q 235 under a Simulated Disbonded Coating

Abstract: Distributions of potential and current and variations of crevice environments are studied in a crevice under a simulated disbonded coating in soil extract solutions (SES) with and without sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Results show that forming of the crevice blocks the penetration of cathodic currents in the crevice and weakens the cathodic polarization of the steel Q 235. The cathodic currents in the presence of SRB are nearly three times more than those without SRB at the same cathodic protective potentia… Show more

“…The corrosion test was carried out for a total of 14d. Aqueous solutions were taken for 0d, 2d, 5d, 10d, and 14d respectively to measure sulfate content by the UV spectrophotometric method (Xu et al, 2013).…”

“…SRB can reduce sulfate to sul de during the growth process, and the change in sulfate content can be calculated to re ect the change in sulfur content in groundwater during the corrosion process (Xu et al, 2013). It was observed that the content of sulfate decreased by about 200 mg/L within 14d in Fig.…”

“…A lot of research was performed to study the corrosion process under disbonded coating (Ma et al , 2020; Xu et al , 2011; Xu et al , 2013). Mathematical models were proposed by Wang et al (2014, 2016) to predict the evolution of chemical properties of corrosive media in a crevice.…”

“…Microbiologically influenced corrosion of metals is widely found in different environments [16,17,18,19,20], however, the effects of AC current on microbiologically influenced corrosion are seldom studied. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are the most important microbes for the corrosion of buried pipelines, and SRB influenced corrosion has been widely found in soils, mines, seaports, lakes, power plants, sewage treatment facilities, offshore structures, and so on [21,22].…”
