Variations in the response of interleukins in neurosurgical intensive care patients monitored using intracerebral microdialysis

Abstract: Data in the present study indicate that catheters with high-cutoff membranes have the potential of expanding microdialysis to the study of protein chemistry as a routine bedside method in neurointensive care.

“…Cerebral microdialysis provides information on the metabolic state of the injured brain and allows determination of a variety of markers for immunocompetence in the cerebral extracellular fluid together with markers for metabolic derangement [12]. This is of relevance since both the blood-brain and blood-CSF barriers may be variably disrupted following aSAH, rendering blood and CSF levels of such markers less reliable [13].…”

“…The method uses a catheter, mimicking a blood capillary, which can be inserted into a variety of tissues. Cerebral microdialysis is used for bedside monitoring in neuro-intensive care [2] as well as a research tool within areas such as drug delivery and neuro-oncology [3].…”
