“…The relationships found between variation in body size parameters of H. labialis females and variation in reproductive output agree with those described for several other anuran species (Crump 1974;Kuramoto 1978;Cummins 1986;Berven 1988;Jørgensen 1992;Grosse 1994;Sinsch 1998;but see Ryser 1996;Martin and Miaud 1999;Miaud et al 1999). Unlike other anuran species (Hemmer and Kadel 1971;Berven 1988;Ryser 1996), age differences between H. labialis females do not explain variation in clutch characteristics, given that during a 4.5-year laboratory study, aging females continued to produce large and heavy clutches until their last oviposition before death.…”

“…Eggs were maintained in the laboratory until hatching and then tadpoles were stored in 90°ethanol. The breeding population sizes (estimated by counting clutches and assuming that each female lays one clutch per year; Miaud et al 1999) varied from less than 20 to more than 2000 breeding females per patch (Table 1).…”

“…One of them is that there has been extensive gene flow between local populations (breeding patches) in the past leading to extensive admixture. The time elapsed between the constructions of highways and road traffic level suppressing frog dispersal (about 30 years) is short given that the generation length of the common frog is 3-4 years (Miaud et al 1999). The effect of fragmentation on genetic structure is more readily detected for species with shorter generation lengths.…”

“…To identify cases of LAG resorption, we calculated the diameters of the innermost and the other visible LAGs; LAG resorption was indicated when the diameter of innermost visible LAG was [2 SD greater than the group mean (Sagor et al 1998). Although LAG resorption is believed to only minimally influence age determination (Gibbons and McCarthy 1983;Miaud et al 1999), we corrected two specimens which were suspected to have resorption phenomena. Furthermore, the sharpness of LAGs may also influence the estimation of frog age; we thus removed three specimens which had faint LAGs.…”
