“…Integrated chlorophyll a in the water column was typically 100-300 mg m −2 in bloom situations with a maximum of about 450 mg m −2 . Similar chlorophyll a concentrations have been found also in other studies in the central Barents Sea (Kristiansen et al, 1994;Reigstad et al, 2002;Wassmann et al, 1999Wassmann et al, , 2006b.…”

“…The ecosystem model includes nutrients (NO 3 , NH 4 , and SiO 4 ), phytoplankton (diatoms and flagellates), bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, microzooplankton, and two mesozooplankters: the Atlantic Calanus finmarchicus and the arctic C. glacialis, two compartments for fast and slow sinking detritus, DOC, and sediments. The model uses constant stoichiometry with a C:N ratio equal 7.6, based upon average data from the Barents Sea [Reigstad et al, 2002]. In the present study, SINMOD data are from a pan-Arctic configuration with 20 km horizontal grid resolution and with 25 vertical layers.…”

“…Although consistent with the dominance of diatoms at the SCM, the Si:NO 3 À drawdown ratio for Franklin Bay (1.86; Figure 9a) and the southeast Beaufort Sea in general (1.75; Simpson et al [2008]) was much higher than in the North Water (1.0 [Tremblay et al, 2002a]) and in the Barents Sea (ca. 0.5 when diatoms dominate [Reigstad et al, 2002]). …”
