Variations in fibrinolytic activity of human whole saliva

Abstract: The physiological variations of fibrinolytic activity (FA) in saliva were investigated in a population of 149 healthy volunteers including 12 pregnant women. An increase in FA could be observed with increasing age. Marked variations were observed during daytime with a peak value early in the morning. Higher FA values were observed in males as compared with females in the 20-39 yr age group. A clear decrease in FA was observed during pregnancy. A significant correlation existed between FA and suspended epitheli… Show more

“…Thus, after surgery, fibrinolysis is triggered. 2 Some patients have a tendency to bleed excessively after trauma. Surgery is the main oral healthcare hazard to the patient with a bleeding tendency, but regional block local anesthetic injections also may be a hazard because bleeding into the fascial spaces of the neck can threaten airway patency.…”

“…Some authors suggest perioperative systemic use of antifibrinolytics with local topical use of these drugs either applied directly in the wound, or in the form of mouthwash solution. 9,12,14,16,17,[22][23][24][25]27,32,37 Saliva and gingival sulcus fluid contain plasminogen and plasminogen activators and do not contain plasminogen inhibitors, [42][43][44] and mouthwash is often used as a 5% solution for 5-7 days after the procedure. If used orally, the drug will show antifibrinolytic activity in the blood, but not in saliva.…”

“…The plasminogen activation system appears to be active in human saliva. Many studies have evaluated the effects Table 1 Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) activity, inhibition, and plasminogen activator inhibitor 2 (PAI-2) antigen in human saliva ( of circadian rhythm, age, gender and stimulation on the flow rate and composition of saliva (11,17,18). The plasminogen activation system may be part of this, especially the balance between PAs and PAIs.…”
