Variations in Ecosystem Service Value and Its Driving Factors in the Nanjing Metropolitan Area of China

Abstract: More than 60% of the world’s ecosystem services have deteriorated over the past few decades. Studying the spatio-temporal fluctuations in ecosystem service value and its influencing factors is important for identifying regional ecosystem service value issues, upholding regional ecological harmony, and encouraging regionally healthy and coordinated sustainable development. Ecosystem service value has so far been studied primarily in relation to the effect of socioeconomic and physical–geographical variables. Ho… Show more

“…Identifying the obstacles to the coordinated development of urbanization and the ecological environment is thus crucial for the sustainable development of urban clusters. This study discovered that social urbanization, provisioning services, supporting services, and cultural services are the main obstacle factors, which are consistent with previous findings [55,56]. This means that the degree of the coupling coordination decreased as the level of the social urbanization significantly increased.…”

“…The monetary value assigned to ecosystems and their key goods and services is termed Ecosystem Service Value (ESV) [4]. However, the rapid variation in ecosystem structure and processes poses a threat to ecosystem stability and biodiversity [5], thereby diminishing the quality of ecosystem services. This decline results from the combined impacts of accelerating natural forcing and increasing the intensity of anthropogenic perturbations.…”

“…For example, the ecological restoration policies implemented by the Liaoning Provincial Government in China, such as returning farmland to forests, significantly increased regional vegetation carbon storage [19]. Chen et al [20] reported that population density strongly explains the spatial differentiation of ecosystem services in the Nanjing metropolitan area of China. Exploring the mechanism of factors influencing the ecological function of mountain vegetation and proposing targeted regional ecological management recommendations will help to maintain the harmonious development of the regional ecological environment.…”
