Variations in Cause and Management of Atrial Fibrillation in a Prospective Registry of 15 400 Emergency Department Patients in 46 Countries

Abstract: Background— Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia; however, little is known about patients in a primary care setting from high-, middle-, and low-income countries. Methods and Results— This prospective registry enrolled patients presenting to an emergency department with AF at 164 sites in 46 countries representing all inhabited continents. Patient characteristics were compared among 9 major geographic regions. … Show more

“…29 INRs were interpolated only when time intervals between successive measurements were 60 days or less, consistent with prior studies. 21,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36] Candidate TTR Predictors A set of 85 candidate predictors of TTR was identified through data elements gathered during usual clinical care and stored within patient EMRs. The general strategy for candidate predictor selection was to assemble a large and diverse set of potential predictors from various domains that might assist in What Are the Clinical Implications?…”

“…(4,5) In low and middle income regions, like Africa and India, RHD still accounts for 22 -32% of all AF patients presenting to an emergency room and 3 -8% of all strokes in China. (6,7) This review will highlight the pathogenesis and epidemiology of RHD, AF and thromboembolism and discuss the evidence for antithrombotic therapy and rhythm control strategies.…”
