Variation of elemental concentrations of river and marine sediments according to the grain size classification

Abstract: In order to characterize the variation of elemental concentrations according to the grain size classification, a total of 795 river and marine sediments were analyzed for major and minor constituents. Almost all the constituents of the river sediments are enriched more in the fine fractions than in the coarse ones, but both K and Ba are often abundant in the coarse fraction of sediments. The K and Ba abundant coarse sediments are commonly derived from the felsic rocks containing a large amounts of potassium fe… Show more

“…Abe et al [29] reported the deposition of a mud layer containing a large amount of silt fraction near the shoreline in the coastline of the Sendai plain, which is a flatland similar to Area Y. Metal compositions in the silt fraction were higher than that in the coarse fraction [30]. Low silt contents strongly affected the metal compositions.…”

“…River sediments are defined as rocks, sand and soil that are eroded and transported downstream in river runoff ( Ohta et al., 2004 ; Terashima et al., 2008 ). As a result, river sediments have characteristics that are similar to the geological characteristics of the rocks in river catchments.…”
