Variation in the fruit characteristics of local pear (Pyrus spp.) in the Northwest of Iran

Abstract: The Northwest of Iran has a high diversity of endemic Pyrus species. In this study, considerable variability in morphological and chemical characteristics was observed in the fruit of 19 local Pyranshahr pear accessions. Fruit samples of three accessions (14, 7 and 10) had higher contents of total soluble solids (TSS [ 23 %) and total sugar (SC *11.5 %) than other accessions with a mean SC of 9 %. There was significant positive correlation between SC and TSS (r = 0.40) as well as between SC and pH (r = 0.46). … Show more

“…CV is usually used as the main indicator to characterize the genetic differences between germplasm, representing the diversity of related traits. Generally speaking, the CV of traits with rich genetic backgrounds is also large, which has a high reference significance for germplasm identification and evaluation [ 46 ]. CV was used to describe the genetic variation of the mineral element content of 36 cabbage cultivars [ 47 ] and 100 Indian banana germplasm [ 48 ].…”

“…There were 36 variant types of morphological traits, with CVs ranging from 21.10% to 201.5%. The CVs, which can reflect the variation range of phenotypic traits [28,29], showed that the dispersion degree was highest for the FA among the examined morphological traits of apple germplasm resources. The Shannon-Wiener genetic diversity index can also reflect phenotypic trait diversity [30].…”

“…For example, in some mangoes, total soluble solids content (TSS) at the point of harvest are approximately 8.7% while the sugar content is only 6.1% [ 14 ]. Similarly, the TSS of certain pears can be as high as 23.0% while the total sugar content is only 10.4% [ 15 ]. Furthermore, fruits contain sugars other than sucrose which lead to additional errors in Brix measurements.…”
