Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans and has anti-cancer function. Garlic can accumulate Se, so it is an option to Se supplementation in the human diet. The aim of this research was to study Se uptake and accumulation during garlic growth. Four doses of Na2SeO4 and Na2SeO3 solution were applied in the substrate (0, 5, 10 and 15 kg ha-1 Se) for one time in August 2014, with a random plot design and 3 replicates on garlic clone Rubi INTA. Three harvests were made, in September, October and December 2014. After each harvest, leaves, bulbs and roots were separated and conditioned (peeled and chopped), lyophilized, and finally acid-digested prior to Se, Mg, Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, P and S determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Se accumulation was proportional to Se doses and did not affect garlic growth. Also, Se distribution among different organs was related to the garlic growth cycle. The Se presence decreased accumulation of Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe, P and S but increased Zn accumulation in plants. Garlic can be an important Se source to humans but it is important to consider Se-doses for biofortification.

Human health depends on the daily supply of fresh vegetables and fruits, which contain the essential, nutrients, vitamins and other bioactive compounds. Due to malnutrition in several places all over the world, the biofortification approach is a crucial solution to overcome this global problem. In the current study, the biological nanofertilizer of selenium (nano-Se) was tested on onion crop comparing with its bulk source under the sandy soil conditions. the applied doses of nano-Se were 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg L−1 in both nano and mineral form of Se. The main investigated parameters of onion were the vegetative growth parameters and the nutritional status in leaves and bulbs. The obtained results have a significant difference between mineral and nano-Se doses for studied measurements. In general, all studied parameters increased in their values with increasing the applied doses from both Se sources up to 30 or 40 mg L−1 compared to the control, depending on the selected parameter. This increase reached to more than 60% (for applied nano-Se on bulb dry weight), or more than 55% for the same parameter after applying mineral Se source. Applying nano Se was achieved higher values in some studied parameters of onion, whereas the mineral form of Se was domain for others. This study confirmed that both Se forms can be applied for biofortification of onion because the Se content in bulb located in the accepted level of Se in crop with priority to nano-Se, which accumulate in leaves and bulb in a lower concentration compared to mineral form. This work opened more question about the nano-biofortification and the possibility to apply for more studied crops with focus on the suitable added dose to be safe for successful biofortification program.

The anticancer activity of the extracts produced from in-vitro cladodes of Opuntia ficus-Indica L. Mill was evaluated. In which, two different treatments of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) 2.5 and 5 mg were supplemented to the basal culture medium. The highest number of shoots per explant and the maximum length of Opuntia shoots were obtained with selenium nanoparticles (5 mg/l) at 11.33 shoots/explant and 8.20 cm, respectively. The highest total phenolic content was found at 168.5 mg/g in the extract of in-vitro cladodes, which were previously cultured on MS medium provided with selenium nanoparticles at 5.0 mg/l, compared to the extract of in-vitro cladodes cultured on MS basal medium with selenium nanoparticles at 2.5 mg/l,which recorded 91.5 mg/g DW of total phenolic. These significant results revealed anticancer activity on both the viability and proliferation/migration of A549 lung cells. Considering cytotoxicity, the IC50 value on A549 cells was 3535.92 μg/ml, showing dose-dependent increases. Meantime, from the in vitro control analyses of the plants, the IC50 value was 3766.16 μg/ml, again showing an increase based on dose dependence. These concluded results refer to a new agent for lung cancer prevention instead of chemoprevention.
