Variation in properties of the sediment following electrokinetic treatments

Abstract: Many studies have reported variation in properties of the sediment within electrokinetic treatments (EKTs). However, we aim to reveal the variation in properties of the sediment following EKTs through laboratory experiments. We collected sewage-derived sediment from a littoral region, and passed it through a 2-mm sieve. We used a potentiostat to cause electrical current in EKT. We measured the sediment properties such as pH, redox potential (ORP), and hydrogen sulphide (HS) concentration at the end of EKT and … Show more

“… 37 and Narong et al . 39 , energy consumption can also be determined according to equation ( 1 ): where P (kWh) is the energy consumption, V (V) is the voltage, I (A) is the current and t (hr) is the time. To determine the specific energy consumption, the above equation was divided by the total amount of the decontaminated soil.…”

“…This dissociation leads to the release of ferric ions in the sediment pore water [8] and changes in the ignition characteristics of the sediment [9]. Moreover, the enhancement of sediment remediation and enrichment of microorganisms in the sediment following electron recovery were confirmed [10]. This study aims to understand changes in organic matter characteristics of sediment when a solar cell-combined SMFC (SC-SMFC) is applied into the sediment.…”

“…This increases the sediment ORP, as following to the Nernst equation. More detailed information concerning the decreasing pH and increasing ORP in sediments by electricity generation can be also found in the reports by Touch et al [10], Choi ta al. [15], and Sturm et al [16].…”

“…As compared with our previous studies [9][10], one of the objectives of this study is to understand the current generation characteristics when a solar cell is combined with the SMFC system (SC-SMFC), and the effects of SC-SMFC on sediment remediation. Another objective is to evaluate the effective distance of anode on sediment remediation.…”
