Variation in Pathogenicity and DNA Polymorphism Among Botrytis cinerea Isolates Sampled Inside and Outside a Glasshouse

Abstract: Colonies of Botrytis cinerea were obtained from spore samplers placed inside and outside a glasshouse with a rose crop. Pure cultures were made from five colonies collected on one sampling date every month throughout the year. These isolates were tested for germination on water agar and for pathogenicity on gerbera and rose petals. The germination rate of the conidia on water agar varied between 60 and 99%. Pathogenicity of the isolates on gerbera and rose flowers ranged from 14 to 166% relative to reference i… Show more

“…Our study of the biological traits of 130 isolates of B. cinerea, originating from six raspberry fields, revealed a great phenotypic variability of this species in raspberry, confirming previous findings in other host plants (Grindle, 1979;Di Lena et al, 1981;Faretra et al, 1988;Leone, 1990;Kerssies et al, 1997;Alfonso et al, 2000;Chardonnet et al, 2000;Yourman et al 2001;Baraldi et al, 2002;Vaczy et al, 2006;Decognet et al, 2007). Based on colony morphology on PDA medium, the isolates were sorted into eight groups, described by Martinez et al (2003).…”

“…Botrytis cinerea not only has a broad host range, but also shows considerable phenotypic variability in vegetative growth, conidiation and sclerotium formation (Kerssies et al 1997;Martinez et al 2003;Schumacher et al 2013). Numerous studies have documented a similar variability in genotypic characters, such as amplified restriction length polymorphism, detection of transposable elements and microsatellite heterogeneity.…”

“…Since the first report of Bergmans et al (1993) on cinerea using RAPD, this technique has the detection of high levels of genetic variation in B. been widely used to determine the variation in B. cinerea from different hosts and countries (Alfonso et al, 2000;Kerssies et al, 1997).…”
