Variation in Immune-Related microRNAs Profile in Human Milk Amongst Lactating Women

Abstract: Considering, this evidence the variation in immune-related miRNAs should be take into account and could be relevant for preterm and hospitalized infants who usually received pasteurized HM from donors.

“…It is then with little surprise that this microRNA is the most studied milk microRNA (Benmoussa et al., ; Golan‐Gerstl et al., ; Melnik, ; Melnik & Schmitz, , ; Simpson et al., ; van Herwijnen et al., ). Other less‐expressed microRNAs have nevertheless been investigated in breast milk, like the immunity‐related microRNAs hsa‐miR‐223 or hsa‐miR‐146a (Iannaccone et al., ; Liao et al., ; Perri et al., ; van Herwijnen et al., ).…”

“…In milk, microRNA expression was related to mammary gland conditions, including infections (Iannaccone et al., ; Lai et al., , ; Sun et al., ), cancer (Decmann et al., ; Do Canto et al., ; Hesari et al., ), pregnancy and lactation status (Carney et al., ; Perri et al., ; Schanzenbach et al., ), and maternal diet (Chen et al., ). Therefore microRNAs in milk were studied for their potential as biomarkers (Gustafson, Tyryshkin, & Renwick, ; Melnik & Schmitz, ) such as quality controls of commercial milk (Oh et al., ).…”

“…It has been recently documented that microRNAs (miRNAs) are present in HM and that specific miRNAs are involved in the innate and acquired immune response. Apparently, miRNA distribution and expression profile are not affected by pasteurization [ 60 ]. As for NEC, Ng et al explored the role of dysregulated miRNAs in the pathogenesis of NEC and spontaneous intestinal perforation in preterm infants.…”

“…Other miRNAs associated with pathological and immune responses include miR-29a-3p (target interferon-γ, suppresses immune response to intracellular pathogens), miR-141-3p (biomarker for colon cancer), miR-378-3p (molecular switch involved in breast cancer cell metabolism), and miR-146b-5p (NF-kB signaling in innate immune responses). Colostrum contain miR-181a and hsa-miR-223, whose targets tend to be T and granulocytes cell populations, and hence affect the developmental stage of adaptive immune response in infants (67). Necrotizing enterocolitis afflicts 1-5% of premature neonates and there is a marked oxidative stress associated in the intestinal epithelial compartment.…”
