Variation in food intake within groups of juvenile perch

Abstract: The coefficient of variation of individual food intake was large in small groups of young-ofthe-year perch Perca fluviatilis (45-60 mm L T ) and smaller when fish that were given the same feeding rank were placed together. No aggressive interactions were detected during feeding. 2002 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

“…In the aquarium experiments, there was a variation in food intake of perch competing in small groups, as has been found earlier (Staffan et al ., 2002; Westerberg et al ., 2004). A consistency in individual feeding success, compared to the same individuals, in several aquarium experiments separated in time has, however, not been found in perch previously.…”

“…Dominance hierarchies in small groups of fishes are often established through aggressive behaviour of dominant individuals towards subordinate individuals [51,52]. Aggressive behaviour in small groups of perch has been observed in a few cases [53] but often no aggression can be observed [54]. Whether aggressive behaviour leads to dominance hierarchies in perch is unclear.…”

“…1993; Sneddon 2003). Different levels of boldness in perch have been found for different populations (Magnhagen 2006), for different size classes within one age class of a population (Borcherding 2006) and even on an individual basis within a social group (Staffan et al. 2002; Magnhagen & Staffan 2003, 2005).…”
