Variation in Callistemon viminalis (Myrtaceae): New evidence from leaf essential oils

Abstract: Analysis of leaf essential oils in Callistemon viminalis (Sol. ex Gaertner) G.Don ex Loudon was used to determine the validity of infraspecific taxa recognised in the taxon. The leaf essential oils obtained, in 0.08–0.63% yield, have been found to be qualitatively similar over the wide geographic distribution of the species (from 12°28′S to 29°43′S) but to differ quantitatively over this range. All oils contained α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene and 1,8-cineole as their major compounds and traces of the β-triketone… Show more

“…The list of constituents found here is generally confirmed by others that have analyzed C. viminalis (Brophy et al, 1985(Brophy et al, , 1997Wheeler et al, 2003), C. citrina , and M. cerifera (Halim and Collins, 1973;Bello et al, 1996) leaves. Feeding and development by the O. vitiosa third instars on the North American M. cerifera was more surprising considering these species are unrelated.…”

“…Compounds were identified by comparing the retention indices of their peaks on BP-1 column with literature values, [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] and finally confirmed by comparison of mass spectra of the peaks with published data [10][11][12] and computer-matching with Wiley and NIST libraries. The relative amounts of individual components are based on peak areas obtained without FID response factor correction.…”

“…The leaf essential oil of C. viminalis exhibited in vitro anthelmintic activity against earthworms, tapeworms and hookworms, while an aqueous extract of the flowers and leaves showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. 1 Although Brophy et al have examined the oils of C. viminalis from Australia in detail, [5][6][7] to the best of our knowledge no detailed GC-MS analysis of C. viminalis leaf oil from India has been carried out. This prompted us to carry out detailed GC and GC-MS analysis of C. viminalis leaf oil from India.…”
