Prefabricated building holds promise for quality, efficiency, and sustainability when compared to traditional techniques. However, realizing prefabricated building work hinges on strengthening supply chain resilience. This research assesses interdependent risks undermining prefab network continuity during disruption. Questionnaire data from industry experts informed a structural equation model quantifying pathways between component production, construction, information, and other uncertainties. Findings confirm that project delays can be traced to manufacturing and on-site risks, with information gaps broadly propagating impacts. Meanwhile, organizational risks have an insignificant influence, suggesting partnership networks readily reconfigure around operational contingencies. Robust information infrastructures and coordination, therefore, offer crucial leverage. Accordingly, a multidimensional resilience enhancement strategy is formulated, prioritizing supply chain transparency, digital integration, inventory buffering, contingencies planning, and transportation flexibility. Our mixed-methods approach advances the construction literature by demonstrating the applicability of structural equation modeling for diagnostic resilience analytics. Industry leaders also gain actionable, evidence-based guidance on strategic investments to stabilize project flows. This dual theoretical and practical contribution underscores the versatility of tailored statistical assessments in furthering construction innovation objectives within complex, uncertain environments.

PurposeOver the past two decades, the construction sector has experienced a surge in projects fueled by substantial government investment in infrastructure. However, amid this growth, the industry grapples with persistent challenges. Meeting project deadlines and budgets remains a struggle, impacting the industry’s credibility. Therefore, this research intends to investigate the idea of lean construction in the construction sector and look at the obstacles facing the construction industry in implementing lean construction strategies.Design/methodology/approachThe insights presented here result from content analysis performed on 206 articles, while the metadata analysis is based on 891 publications.FindingsThis study highlights numerous important characteristics that influence an organization’s capacity to accomplish lean construction using a systematic literature review approach.Research limitations/implicationsFor forthcoming research seeking validation, utilizing a mixed-method approach could prove advantageous. Yet, it is crucial to recognize the constraints of the present study, primarily centered on the scope of the literature review.Practical implicationsThis assessment will enhance comprehension of the lean construction concept, potentially encouraging the adopting of lean construction practices. Moreover, it could provide insights into effectively applying these methods in practice.Originality/valueThe literature review highlights the necessity for organizations to identify and address potential challenges they might encounter in implementing lean construction. An essential step in overcoming these obstacles involves exploring the concept of lean construction within the sector and assessing the hurdles constraining the implementation of lean construction strategies in the construction industry.

PurposeMegaprojects are typically very expensive public-centred projects that leave little space for any mismanagement or deficient planning, which could affect the project adversely. The Last Planner™ System (LPS) is a lean construction planning and control tool that functions to reduce waste and increase performance. Given the benefits, the application of the LPS in megaprojects is still scarce, especially in Malaysia. Hence, this study aims to compare the current production planning, monitoring and review practices in a megaproject with the LPS in order to explore the possibilities of adapting the LPS to the current practices.Design/methodology/approachThis longitudinal case-based study has first explored the current practices implemented in an infrastructure megaproject, which is an urban rapid transit (URT) project, which was then compared to the standard LPS practices. The case study has adopted several research methods such as observation, interview and document review.FindingsFindings from the study highlight that the current production planning, monitoring and review practices in the URT project mostly differs from the standard LPS practices with only slight similarities found in the major planning phases. The comparative study, which based on five reference points through master, phase, look-ahead, weekly work plan and measure, and learning has resulted in several key elements, representative of the different planning phases, such as collaborative programming, reverse planning, reliability, dependability and continuous learning.Practical implicationsThis study provides an alternative perspective to rail planners, as well as other types of project planners in considering the use of the LPS to enhance the quality of planning, monitoring and review in projects. The framework that highlights the core values and key elements for the related planning phases enables project teams with no lean background to partially adapt their current practices to the LPS with minimal disruption.Originality/valueThis study first contributes to the body of knowledge, where limited study was found comparing and contrasting current production planning practices against the LPS, particularly in rail-based megaproject. The results from the comparison are the key elements representing each of the planning phases that was rooted back to the core values (teamwork, involvement and collaboration, communication and transparency, and continuous improvement) necessary to enhance the current practices.
