Variants of dermatofibroma - a histopathological study

Abstract: Several variants of dermatofibroma have been described. They are essentially distinguished by their clinical and histopathological features. To review the mainfeaturesof these variants, a retrospective study of skin biopsies and tissue excisions of dermatofibromasperformed in the dermatology and venereology service at the Hospital Garcia de Orta between May 2007 and April 2012 was carried out. During that period, 192 dermatofibromas were diagnosed in 181 patients, the lesions being more common in women. Median… Show more

“…The prevalence of this variant in the general population is unknown, but some evidence suggest that it is as low as 2.1% in different dermatofibroma types (1). Lipidized dermatofibroma was described by Iwata as "ankle-type" dermatofibroma (fibrous histiocytoma) due to its characteristic location on the lower extremities (2).…”

“…[4,5] Histologically, the lesion is composed of interlacing fascicles of spindled cells set within a loose collagenous stroma associated with epidermal changes. [1] The lesional cells include a variable combination of fibroblasts, macrophages, and blood vessels. [1] Several clinical and histopathological dermatofibroma variants have been reported in the literature.…”

“…Atrophic DF is identified by dermal atrophy with prominent sclerotic collagen, as well as low cellularity. It has been proposed that dense elastic fibers around the vessels interfere with blood circulation, causing dermal atrophy, and thus low cellularity [7].…”
