The Santa María pottery of El Bolsón valley (Catamarca, Argentina): Compositional characterization and implications on the elaboration processes, ca. 1000–1600 ce

“…Particularly, in the El Bolsón valley, grog temper was used in the production of ordinary ceramics, but not in the locally fabricated Belén style pieces (Puente, 2012; Puente et al, 2017). Previous petrographic descriptions available for Santa María pottery manufactured in Yocavil and Tafí valleys coincide with our results (Páez, 2010; Páez et al, 2005; Palamarczuk, 2008, 2014; Piñeiro, 1996; Sjödin, 1998). For this reason, we consider that the samples analysed by us may proceed from those valleys, or from neighbouring valleys—for example, the Cajon valley or north of Hualfín, where Santa María style pieces predominate with pastes of the same characteristics as those studied here.…”

“…The main places of production and consumption recognized so far are the group called ‘Calchaquíes Valleys’—among them, the Yocavil valley, the Calchaquí valley, the Quebrada de Las Conchas/Lerma valley extending throughout the provinces of Catamarca, Tucumán and Salta—and the adjacent valleys of Cajón, Tafí, Quebrada del Toro and the piedmont of Tucumán (Nastri, 2018). However, there are also specimens that circulated to, or maybe were produced in, nearby valleys—for example, Hualfín (next to El Bolsón), and distant regions, such as the southern Argentine puna (Iucci, 2016; Palamarczuk, 2014; Pérez & Gasparotti, 2016; Puente, 2020, among others). This ceramic style was part of the daily life of various farming–pastoral communities that lived in towns and whose social and political organization, traditionally considered as hierarchical, is currently a matter of debate (Nastri, 2014; Tarragó, 2000).…”
