Variance of vegetation coverage and its sensitivity to climatic factors in the Irtysh River basin

Abstract: Background Climate change is an important factor driving vegetation changes in arid areas. Identifying the sensitivity of vegetation to climate variability is crucial for developing sustainable ecosystem management strategies. The Irtysh River is located in the westerly partition of China, and its vegetation cover is more sensitive to climate change. However, previous studies rarely studied the changes in the vegetation coverage of the Irtysh River and its sensitivity to climate factors from a s… Show more

“…This memory effect should be considered when assessing vegetation responses to short-term climate variability (Seddon et al, 2016). Vegetation in arid areas usually has a strong ability to cope with the disturbance of climatic factors; therefore, the vegetation in these areas usually shows a strong memory effect (Han et al, 2021).…”

“…This paper uses Theil-Sen median trend analysis coupled with a Mann-Kendall test 307 to analyze future ARSEI trends in the IRB. It has been successfully applied in various 308 studies related to hydrological and meteorological trend changes [77,78]. Theil-Sen me-309 dian has the advantages of not being affected by missing data, being insensitive to meas-310 urement errors and outlier data, and having high computational efficiency [79,80].…”

“…The Altai Mountains have a northwest to southeast trend and cross China diagonally. The Altai Mountains first appeared during the Caledonian movement, and the Himalayan movement caused the Altai Mountains to rise along the NW-trending fault block displacement, which provided shelters for several species and contributed to the high biodiversity of the areas [102,103].…”
