Variance decomposition of firm performance: past, present and future

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a review of variance decomposition studies of firm performance and the theoretical foundations that served as the antecedents and promptings for this stream of research. Known collectively as “variance decomposition literature,” these studies use variance decomposition techniques to partition firm performance into various classes of effects in a bid to unveil the relative importance of factors responsible for firm performance variance. Design/methodology/approa… Show more

“…First, the MFI effect remains the dominant source of variance in both financial and social performance. This is consistent with the results of variance decomposition studies on regular firms (Esho and Verhoef, 2020). Second, we find that country-level matters significantly in both MFI social and financial performance, especially in generating social impact.…”

“…These results come in line with [20,21]. Also, in an attempt to reveal the relative importance of the factors responsible for changing firm performance, another analysis notes that although firm-specific effects remain the dominant and have the most important impact on firm performance, the effects shaping firm performance are interdependent [22]. The industry effects make a greater contribution than the country ones, although qualitatively both sets of effects are smaller in relation the company effects and the corporate group.…”
