“…However, for the rest of the combinations of drought and temperature treatments, the different cultivars reacted differently. Differences among cultivars towards drought conditions may be the result of a range of various characters in the plant, including both root and leaf characters [36]. Thus, cultivars capable of extracting more water from the soil and maintaining a good water status in the tissues are able to withstand drought and to produce grains.…”

“…The cultivars included in this study reacted differently to the temperature and drought treatments. Effects of drought treatments on different genotypes is known to be the result of a range of various characters in the plant, including both root and leaf characters [36]. However, the only persistent difference recorded was that ‘Zong geng’ showed significantly higher drought sensitivity as compared to the other cultivars as it showed a higher leaf rolling and drying at both the seedling and tillering stages and the significantly largest decrease in number of panicles plant −1 .…”

“…The most significant pathway for breeders is to enhance the plant yield per area, but the negative trade-off of traits is a barrier (Blum, 1996; Ribaut, 2006; Passioura, 2007, 2010; Tuberosa, 2012). Drought stress causes a reduction in grain yield, and heritability of grain yield under drought stress may reach 17.1% compared with 54.5% under normal conditions (Mathew et al, 2018). In the present study, several questions were investigated: (1) to assess the possibility of using a reduced and robust trait model for phenotyping the plastic plant response to drought, (2) to correlate peroxisome abundance to other traits for testing its suitability to be used as a cellular trait and establishing a high-throughput technique for quantification, (3) to analyze the differential dynamics of the adaptive response vs. the non-adaptive response under drought.…”

“…Thousand kernel weight presents in general high heritability and is less affected by the water deficit (Arguello et al, 2016; Mathew et al, 2018). In triticale, the significant correlation between TKW and gas exchange (An, gs, An/Ci), and the higher chlorophyll content compared to wheat, suggest that triticale continue assimilating carbon and mobilizing it to the grain, during grain filling.…”
