In recent decades, Boa Viagem beach located in the city of Recife-PE and Piedade in Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE (Brazil) has seen urbanization near the coastline causing changes in social, economic and morphological aspects, where coastal erosion problems are observed. This study uses GNSS (global navigation satellite system) shoreline monitoring approach, which is quicker, and provides continuously updatable data at cm-level accuracy to analyze and determine temporal positional shifts of the shoreline as well as annual average rates through EPR (end point rate). To achieve this, kinematic GNSS survey data for the years 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012 were used. The results show sectorial trends over the years, with the highest annual retreat rate of 8.16 m /year occurring during the period 2007-2009. Variety of differents patterns over the shoreline was also observed. These findings could be essential for decision making in coastal environments.

RESUMOEste trabalho tem por objetivo o levantamento bibliográfico dos trabalhos que realizaram estudos morfológicos nas praias do litoral de Pernambuco, classificá-los de acordo com as diferentes abordagens adotadas, além da análise da distribuição espacial e temporal dos mesmos. No litoral de Pernambuco o estudo morfológico das praias foi realizado por 36 trabalhos. O primeiro trabalho foi realizado por Ottman em 1959. No entanto, a retomada e a consolidação deste tipo de estudo ocorre somente 46 anos depois, a partir da segunda metade dos anos 90. Espacialmente, estes se encontram bem distribuídos no Setor Médio da costa e concentrados em algumas praias no Setor Norte e Sul. Em relação as diferentes abordagens adotadas, predomina o processo-resposta em 2D, e a realização do perfil até a antepraia superior. Os estudos são ainda uma tentativa inicial de conhecimento do comportamento e dos problemas ambientais do ambiente praial. Ainda há praias que nunca foram monitoradas, e em muitas o monitoramento foi temporalmente e espacialmente insuficiente para a compreensão dos diferentes processos costeiros que influenciam e condicionam o comportamento morfológico das mesmas em longo prazo.Palavras chaves: perfil de praia, morfologia, Pernambuco. Boa Viagem and Pina are urban beaches highly economically important both locally and regionally providing protection for the southern coast of Recife, Pernambuco -Brazil. The objective of this paper is to study the interannual morphological changes which occur on these beaches in order to gather information on the erosion processes. For this purpose 6 topographical profiles were monitored, monthly, from August 2002 to December 2005, during spring tide. To establish the position of each profile it was considered whether the beach was protected by reefs, or not, and if there were coastal protection structures. The largest morphological variation was observed in profiles located to the extreme South and North of the area of study (profiles 1 and 5), as well as the profiles located immediately to the North of the coastal protection features (profiles 4A and 4B). Profiles located in the middle of the study area showed stability. As for sedimentary budget the following variations were observed: negative sedimentary budget in profiles P1 (-4 . Profiles 2 and 3 presented a more consistent budget than those of the profiles located at the extremities of the area (profiles 1, 4A, 4B and 5). The profiles did not present morphologic variations in the beach environment like those mentioned in conventional literature. Profiles 2-1, 3-2 e 4A-3 do not present a linear relation between rates of sedimentary budget. However a positive linear relation between profiles 4B-3 and 5-4B was observed. Variations of accretion and erosion found in this study may be related to seasonal variations in the direction of currents along the coast.
