Variability of Volatile Compounds in the Medicinal Plant Dendrobium officinale from Different Regions

Abstract: Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo, a rare and traditional medicinal plant, contains many nutrients such as polysaccharides, alkaloids, amino acids and so on. Different growth environment and intraspecific hybridization of different germplasm resources lead to large differences in the yield, quality and medicinal value of D. officinale. Here, the volatile compounds of D. officinale from four producing regions (Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan and Jiangxi) were analyzed to provide a certain reference value for the se… Show more

“…Studies on the components of DO identified polysaccharides, alkaloids, amino acids, esters, alcohols, flavonoids, glycosides, etc. (Zhou et al., 2018 ; Hu et al., 2020 ). In this study, the FTIR analysis of Do-AuNPs showed a peak at 1640.98 cm −1 , 1731.92 cm −1 , and 2928 cm −1 , which not only indicated the existence of esters and aromatic compounds, but also supported the possible underlying mechanisms of DO extract to reduce chloroauric acid to synthesize Do-AuNPs.…”

“…The C-H stretching vibration contributed to the absorption peak at 2927.88 cm −1 and the C = O stretching vibration might account for the peak at 1632.7 cm −1 . These two peaks, as well as the peak at 1729.47 cm −1 suggested that it was the endogenous reducibility of PCSP that enabled the reduction of HAuCl 4 to PCSP-AuNPs (Hu et al., 2020 ; Zhang et al., 2021 ). The result for EDAX is displayed in Figure 3F , showing the presence of gold ions in the PCSP-AuNPs, which indeed validated the efficient formation of PCSP-AuNPs.…”

“…The scent recognized for both D. chrysotoxum and D. wardianum could be due to the high presence of esters in floral VOCs that we detected during our analyses. Esters are produced by the reaction of alcohols with organic acids; they typically have fruity smells and are indeed among the molecules responsible for the odors of many fruits [ 43 ]. High content of volatile esters has been linked with the strong flavor of the “snow chrysanthemum” cultivar of Coreopsis by Kim et al (2020) [ 44 ].…”
