Variability of the Compressive Strength of Parallel Strand Lumber

Abstract: Measurement of the compressive strength of parallel strand lumber ͑PSL͒ is conducted on specimens of varying size with nominally identical mesostructure. The mean of the compressive strength is found to vary inversely with the specimen size, and the coefficient of variation of the strength is found to decrease with increasing specimen size, and to be smaller than the coefficient of variation of strength for solid lumber. The correlation length of the compressive strength is approximately 0.5 m, and this correl… Show more

“…The coefficient of variation values are similar to the values obtained by other authors [23][24][25] . As can be observed, the f c0 , f t0 , f t90 and f v0 values obtained were coherent with the values in Annex E of the Brazilian standard 11 for cedro, cumaru, cupiúba, sucupira and tatajuba.…”

“…e consistent properties and fire resistance of PSL are superior to those of raw wood [2]. us, PSL has sufficient strength and rigidity [3] that makes PSL material very well suitable as beams and columns for crossand large-span building structure and for high-rise buildings [2]. In addition, due to the development of the energy-efficient building and green building initiatives, PSL has been becoming an extensively potential prospective structural material for building constructions.…”

“…According to Wood Handbook (Forest Products Laboratory, 1999), the coefficients of variation (COV) for strength and modulus of Elasticity is approximately 20% for solid timber members. (Arwade et al, 2010).…”
