Variability of near‐fault seismic risk to reinforced concrete buildings based on high‐resolution physics‐based ground motion simulations

Abstract: Broadband physics-based simulated earthquake ground motions are utilized to characterize the regional-scale seismic risk to modern reinforced concrete (RC) structures. A highly dense dataset of ground motions covering a 100-km × 40km domain was generated using kinematic fault rupture models with varying rupture characteristics to represent shallow crustal earthquakes and resolved up to frequencies of 5 Hz. Over 40,000 nonlinear response history simulations of short-and mid-rise RC special moment frame building… Show more

“…[10][11][12][13][14] With the development of the physics-based ground motion simulations, the source-to-structure simulation, which is also called the "end-to-end simulation" has attracted increasing research attention in recent years. 10,[15][16][17][18] However, the seismic analysis for dams based on the source-to-structure simulation is still in its infancy. A key issue for the source-tostructure simulation is how to couple the wave propagation simulation and the structure response analysis.…”

“…Recently, region‐specific, physics‐based ground motion simulations that account for source, wave path and site effects are becoming of increasing interest and being used in seismic risk analysis 22–30 . An advantage of using simulated ground motions in seismic hazard and risk analysis is the ability to incorporate region‐specific source and wave propagation effects that are not fully representable in empirical ground motion models 31 .…”
