Variability of dense water formation in the Ross Sea

Abstract: This paper presents results from a model study of the interannual variability of high salinity shelf water (HSSW) properties in the Ross Sea. Salinity and potential temperature of HSSW formed in the western Ross Sea show oscillatory behaviour at periods of 5-6 and 9 years superimposed on long-term fluctuations. While the shorter oscillations are induced by wind variability, variability on the scale of decades appears to be related to air temperature fluctuations. At least part of the strong decrease of HSSW sa… Show more

“…Major features of the horizontal circulation (Fig. 6b) are in general well-reproduced with an ACC strength of 150-160 Sv, a Weddell Gyre of 50 Sv (Beckmann et al, 1999), a Ross Gyre of 20-30 Sv (Assmann and Timmermann, 2005) and a North Atlantic Sub-tropical and Sub-polar Gyres of 30-40 Sv.…”

“…9). In the Ross Sea, ISW rich water follows the circulation of the Ross Gyre (e.g., Assmann and Timmermann (2005)) as far as Cap Adare (western tip) where the signal splits into two branches (Fig. 9).…”

“…For example, a long-term freshening of shelf water masses of both the Weddell and Ross Seas has been observed ; Jacobs and Giulivi, 2010; Hellmer et al, 2011), but the causes of this freshening are still under debate (e.g. Assmann and Timmermann, 2005;Rignot and Jacobs, 2002). Hellmer et al (2009) showed that decadal variability of the salinity of the southwestern Weddell Sea shelf water can be related to the Southern Annular Mode, which impacts both the ocean dynamics and sea ice processes in the Southern Ocean (Hall and Visbeck, 2002) and, consequently, the AABW contribution to the deep ocean (Kerr et al, 2009a).…”
