Variability in pomological traits of dog rose (Rosa canina L.) under the ecological conditions of the Republic of Croatia

Abstract: Wild or dog rose (Rosa canina L.) is a successful colonizer of various habitats and different soil types and is widely distributed across the Republic of Croatia. In this research, in order to estimate pomological variability in native dog rose populations, four genotypes from four locations in different geographic areas of Croatia were selected and sampled. The genotypes selected were: genotype G1, originating from the continental part of Croatia (Pitomača); genotypes G2 and G3, originating from the Mediterra… Show more

“…In this context, the aforementioned data of the fruits collected from the regions to which they are adapted show significant differences. The findings are similar to the pomological data determined in the literature (Kovacs et al, 2005;Celik et al, 2005;Kizılci, 2005;Savir, 2008;Gunes, 2010;Ozcelik, 2013;Akkus, 2016;Ipek and Balta, 2020;Tomlijenovic et al, 2021;Guler et al,2021).…”

“…Plants have gained great importance in the drug discovery and development process due to their secondary metabolite content (Bose et (Godwin, 1975;Tomlijenovic et al, 2021). As a result of the archaeological studies carried out in Diyarbakır, the remains of Rosa belonging to the neolithic age were found (Özdoğan and Başgelen, 2007).…”

“…In recent years, medical interest in the subgenus Rosa , section Caninae , has increased considerably due to recent research investigating its potential use for inflammatory disorders, diabetes, obesity, hepatotoxicity and many other diseases [ 1 ]. The morphological, pomological and genetic variability of the genotypes of Rosa canina Laxa, wild or dog rose, is spread throughout Croatia in the form of spontaneous populations and ecotypes [ 2 ]. The fruit of the dog rose ‘rose hip’ is characterised by a series of bioactive compounds with high antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, which are used in food and in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, among others.…”
