Variability, heritability and genetic advance in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Abstract: The analysis of variance study indicated the presence of significant difference among all the traits in Gossypium hirsutum accessions. The highest phenotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) were recorded by seed index, plant height, lint index and boll weight. Genotypic coefficient of variation had a similar trend as PCV. High heritability along with high genetic advance was observed in traits viz., number of sympodia per plant, single plant yields, seed index and mi… Show more

“…Similar observations have been reported in upland cotton by Dheva and Potdukhe (2002), Preetha and Raveendran (2007), Amir et al (2012), Abbas et al (2013). The moderate PCV and GCV that were observed for girth and height increment were consistent with the reports by Girase and Mehatne (2002), Harshal (2010) in outturn studies of cotton. Such moderate phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation noticed for girth and height will require vigorous selection for improvement.…”

“…Seed index had a positive linkage with bolls per plant, boll weight and fiber length (Table 2) (Table 3). Dhivya et al (2014), Kaleri et al (2016), Kumar and Katageri (2017), and Rajamani et al (2015) estimated of 60.01%, 72.24%, 51.63% and 66.72% heritability correspondingly for seed index. Significant progress is possible through selection for this character.…”

“…Its fiber industry comprises of 1815 textile and ginning units run by millions of the people which depends on cotton production (Khan, 2013). Due to its contribution in financial stability in more than 80 countries and multiple uses as lint and its by-products, it is called as "white gold" (Saeed et al, 2014;Dhivya et al, 2014). The upland cotton (G. hirsutum L.) has attracted valuable scientific interest of plant breeders due to its economic importance regarding yield and environmental suitability (Sun et al, 2019).…”
