Variability and reproducibility of multi-echo T2 relaxometry: Insights from multi-site, multi-session and multi-subject MRI acquisitions

Abstract: Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) can increase the specificity and sensitivity of conventional weighted MRI to underlying pathology by comparing meaningful physical or chemical parameters, measured in physical units, with normative values acquired in a healthy population. This study focuses on multi-echo T2 relaxometry, a qMRI technique that probes the complex tissue microstructure by differentiating compartment-specific T2 relaxation times. However, estimation methods are still limited by their s… Show more

“…In the last years, together with other methods, a combined gradient and spin echo (GRASE) sequence has been adopted for myelin water imaging (MWI), reducing the acquisition time to less than 10 min with full brain coverage (50). Reproducibility of MWI with this technique has been demonstrated in a multi-site multi-vendor study (51) and with different reconstruction methods (52).…”

“…50 Reproducibility of MWI with this technique has been demonstrated in a multisite multivendor study51 and with different reconstruction methods. 52 However, MWI with T2 mapping is not without challenges, and several factors need to be considered. The signal-to-noise ratio in MWI with T2 mapping is low.…”
