“…Morris [19] described in his textbook that the middle colic artery arising from the celiac trunk, the hepatic or the splenic artery was frequently observed. However, such cases are supposed to be rather few: 0.5% |11]: 1/204 [13]; 5% [9], or 1 case [10,12,14], Of those, only in 3 cases reported by Adachi [ 17], Matsuzaki [ 10] and Sato et al [ 14] is the accessory colic artery from the celiac trunk certified as homologous with the CSS arising from the celiac trunk.…”

“…This process is supposed to occur secondarily after the completion of rotation of the midgut loop around the superior mesenteric artery, because it seems very improbable that the anastomosis between the celiac trunk supplying the foregut and the CSS supplying the most caudal part of the midgut is formed before the rotation of the midgut. Schaeffer 119], Feigl et al [13] and Netter [ 18] understood the formation of the middle colic artery derived from the celiac trunk in the same way as this process. Woodburne and Olsen [9], Michels [7,21] and Okamoto et al [221 also suggested the morphological sig nificance of the dorsal pancreatic artery in the formation of the anastomosis between the celiac trunk and the supe rior mesenteric artery.…”

“…As a rule, the middle colic artery is a branch of the superior mesenteric artery, arising from its ventral aspect below the pancreatic notch [ 4 , 5 ]. In certain cases—as in the present one—the middle colic artery may arise from the celiac trunk or one of its branches [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. It has also been found to originate from the inferior mesenteric artery [ 12 ] or directly from the aorta [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Several authors described these variants as single observations during anatomical dissection. It arose, in addition to the regular three branches from the celiac trunk [ 11 ], from a “pentapus” (celiac trunk with five instead of three branches) [ 8 ], from the proximal segment of the splenic artery [ 6 ] or the proximal segment of the common hepatic artery [ 7 , 10 ]. One author detected a replaced middle colic artery arising from the celiac trunk during a celiac angiography performed in a 12-year-old girl [ 9 ].…”
