The Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Q-fly), is a major horticultural pest in Eastern Australia. Effective monitoring, male annihilation technique (MAT) and mass trapping (MT) are all important for control and require strong lures to attract flies to traps or toxicants. Lure strength is thought to be related in part to volatility, but little vapour pressure data are available for most Q-fly lures. Raspberry ketone (4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone) and analogs that had esters (acetyl, difluoroacetyl, trifluoroacetyl, formyl, propionyl) and ethers (methyl ether, trimethylsilyl ether) in replacement of the phenolic group, and in one case also had modification of the 2-butanone side chain, were measured for their vapour pressures by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and their attractiveness to Q-fly was assessed in small cage environmentally controlled laboratory bioassays. Maximum response of one category of compounds, containing both 2-butanone side chain and ester group was found to be higher than that of the other group of compounds, of which either of 2-butanone or ester functionality was modified. However, linear relationship between vapour pressure and maximum response was not significant. The results of this study indicate that, while volatility may be a factor in lure effectiveness, molecular structure is the dominating factor for the series of molecules investigated.

Optimal Designs for Antoine’s Equation: Compound Criteria and Multi-Objective Designs via Genetic Algorithms

Antoine’s Equation is commonly used to explain the relationship between vapour pressure and temperature for substances of industrial interest. This paper sets out a combined strategy to obtain optimal designs for the Antoine Equation for D- and I-optimisation criteria and different variance structures for the response. Optimal designs strongly depend not only on the criterion but also on the response’s variance, and their efficiency can be strongly affected by a lack of foresight in this selection. Our approach determines compound and multi-objective designs for both criteria and variance structures using a genetic algorithm. This strategy provides a backup for the experimenter providing high efficiencies under both assumptions and for both criteria. One of the conclusions of this work is that the differences produced by using the compound design strategy versus the multi-objective one are very small.

Triethyl phosphate (TEPO,, tri-npropyl phosphate (TPPO,, and diethyl malonate (DEM, are of considerable interest to the chemical defense community as nontoxic simulants for toxic chemical warfare agents. Vapor pressure data have been measured for TEPO at T = (271.25 to 480.15) K, for TPPO at T = (263.15 to 527.61) K, and for DEM at T = (265.15 to 471.25) K using a variety of standard methods that have been modified as necessary. The new data extend the range of vapor pressure data previously reported in the literature for each of the title compounds to subambient temperatures and to lower pressures by approximately 3 orders of magnitude for TEPO, 5 orders of magnitude for TPPO, and 1 order of magnitude for DEM. Vapor pressure data and derived properties, including volatility and temperature-dependent heats of vaporization are reported for TEPO, TPPO, and DEM along with comparisons to chemical warfare agent materials.
