Summary: Rod‐like cellulose polymers, with flexible isopentyl side chains, form supramolecular constructs by the Langmuir‐Blodgett (LB) technique. These have been employed to model an ultrathin multilayered primer for surface modification by polymerization. Multilayers of this polymer were doped with a solution of a photosensitizer and then exposed to methyl methacrylate, (MMA) in either the vapor or liquid phase. Polymerization of the monomer swollen construct was induced photochemically. FT‐IR spectra reveal that photoinitiation in presence of the photosensitizer or irradiation in the far UV region induces photografting by hydrogen abstraction from the constituents of the layered assembly. Employing a combination of photoinitiators (benzophenone and 4,4′‐bis(diethylamino)‐benzophenone) and irradiation of the construct that was saturated by monomer from the gas phase in the near UV region caused the formation of a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network. Linear polymer chains of PMMA grow and entangle inside the layered assembly of the cellulose derivative. The resulting composite consists of two polymers, isopentylcellulose and poly(methyl methacrylate) demonstrating a possibility to produce a homogeneous layered composite film at nanoscopic scale as revealed by the X‐ray reflectometry. Surface photopolymerization was also achieved in the liquid phase where the monomer and photoinitiator solution was in direct contact with the layered assembly.Schematic picture of the composite films consisting of multilayered CIPC and PMMA incorporated via vapor phase photopolymerization. “…Although the grafting of MAH onto PP with a thermal initiator has been studied extensively, very little information exists regarding the MAH photografting process with BP as the initiator in the polymer melt or bulk solution. Previous studies of the surface photografting of MAH onto PP films or powder have generally suggested that the grafting process also follows the mechanism shown in Scheme 5, 10, 25. However, because of probable differences in the diffusion rates of the reactive species to the sites of initiation, it is reasonable to expect that bulk grafting in either the solution or melt state will be significantly different than that observed with surface grafting.…”

In situ observations of submicron fluorescent tracers suspended in high ionic strength media sealed in a confined geometry are combined with 3-D simulations in order to provide a better understanding of the synergism between dielectrophoresis and electrothermal flows that cause rapid particle transport and trapping on the surface of planar quadrupolar microelectrodes. The influence of electrode design on the microfluidic patterns and observed particle collection is examined by employing two different types of microelectrodes in the experiments. The potential use of quadrupolar microelectrodes as means for achieving accelerated sampling and signal amplification in future surface based biosensor devices is illustrated with an experiment involving stable capture of antigen-coated polystyrene particles on the surface of an antibody-functionalized microelectrode array.Des observations in situ de traceurs fluorescents submicroniques en suspension dans des milieuxà force ioniqueélevée enfermés dans une configuration confinée sont combinéesà des simulations en 3-D dans le but de mieux comprendre la synergie entre lesécoulements de type diélectrophorèse etélectrothermique qui entraînent un transport rapide des particules et le piégeageà la surface des microélectrodes quadrupolaires planaires.
