Vapor-phase photodecomposition of aldrin and dieldrin

Abstract: A special reactor was constructed to study the vapor-phase photodecomposition of pesticides by ultraviolet (UV) light. The reactor was designed in such a way that wall reactions would be minimized and could be distinguished from actual vaporphase transformations. The vapor-phase photodecomposition of the insecticides aldrin and dieldrin were studied with this reactor. Irradiation of aldrin vapor with UV light resulted in the formation of photoaldrin and dieldrin. Irradiation of either photoaldrin or dieldrin v… Show more

“…For example, the insecticide aldrin was widely used before its ban in 1974. However, it is rarely detected in monitoring studies because in the environment it breaks down rapidly to dieldrin, which is considerably more resistant to further degradation [33]. In our study, aldrin was detected at only one site, whereas dieldrin was detected at 21% of the sites in sediment and at 50% of the sites in fish.…”

“…Detection of dieldrin and absence of aldrin in soil samples indicated old use of eldrin. Degradation of aldrin residues to dieldrin is rapid in soils (Crosby and Moilanen 1974). Heptachlor is another chlorinated cyclodiene that is extensively used as insecticide in agriculture before its ban.…”

“…Anal. Calcd for C 10 (1) in Air One milliliter of a n-hexane solution of 3 (22.3 mmol/mlϭ500 ml gas/ml) was taken into a 180 ml Pyrex reaction vessel. n-Hexane vapor was flushed out with air (ca.…”
