Vapor-liquid equilibrium of methane-benzene, methane-methylbenzene (toluene), methane-1,3-dimethylbenzene (m-xylene), and methane-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (mesitylene) at 313.2 K up to the critical point

Abstract: A static method, described In a previous article, has been used to perform high-pressure vapor-liquid equilibria up to the critical point on methane-aromatic hydrocarbon systems. Comparisons with literature data are presented. New data are given for the systems methane-m -xylene and methane-mesltylene.

“…The lowest isotherm of Lin et al (1979) coincides with our measurements at 423 K. Measurements by Elbishlawi and Spencer (1951) are in the range of the present work, but their data have been cited as possibly inaccurate (Legret et al, 1982). As a result, we decided to perform the measurements reported here.…”

“…The experimentally measured equilibrium liquid and vapor compositions for the mesitylene-methane system are presented in Table I and alted equilibrium ratios for each component in the binary system at each of the three temperatures are also given in Table 1 and are shown in Figure 2. The results of Legret et al ( 1982) in the binary system at their lower pressure region (two pressure points at 10.17 MPa and 14.45 MPa) at 313.2 K , are included in Figures I and 2 for comparison. The results are in reasonably good agreement with those obtained in this work, although there is some discrepancy in the nitrogen content of the liquid phase.…”

“…(1982) on methane and carbon dioxide with rn-xylene, and by Huang and Robinson (1983) on hydrogen sulfide with rn-xylene and with mesitylene. Legret et al (1982) studied the liquid-vapor equilibrium relations in the mesitylene-methane system over a wide range of pressure, up to the critical pressure and to a temperature of 313.2 K . Their results are included in this report for comparison.…”
