Vanadium: Biological, Environmental, and Engineering Aspects

Abstract: Vanadium is an element that is widely distributed in Earth's crust as well as in seawater and groundwater reservoirs. Therefore, it exerts a great influence on the issues related to life and environment. Vanadium is utilized by several marine organisms. For example, there are vanadate-dependent haloperoxidases in algae and several bacteria, e.g., Azotobacter, use it for nitrogen fixation and bacterial reduction involves the conversion of vanadate to oxidovanadium (IV). The similarity between vanadate and phosp… Show more

“…191 Vanadium is used as an antipredator agent when it is accumulated by certain fauna. 192 Biotransformation can also occur during abovementioned processes by faunal specific detoxification systems (e.g., cytochrome P450 enzyme, and metallothionein protein synthesis). 191 Unfortunately, knowledge on the uptake, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation of V by earthworms is still lacking.…”
