Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has a tremendous impact on the quality of life of humans. While experimental animals are valuable to medical research as models of human diseases, cardiac systems differ widely across various animal species. Thus, we examined a CVD model in cynomolgus monkeys. Laboratory primates are precious resources, making it imperative that symptoms of diseases and disorders are detected as early as possible. Thus, in this study we comprehensively examined important indicators of CVD in cynomolgus monkeys, including arterial blood gas, complete blood count (CBC), biochemistry and cardiac hormones. The control group included 20 healthy macaques showing non-abnormal findings in screening tests, whereas the CVD group included 20 macaques with valvular disease and cardiomyopathy. An increase of red blood cell distribution width was observed in the CBC, indicating chronic inflammation related to CVD. An increase of HCO3 was attributed to the correction of acidosis. Furthermore, development of the CVD model was supported by significant increases in natriuretic peptides. It is suggested that these results indicated a correlation between human CVD and the model in monkeys. Moreover, blood tests including arterial blood gas are non-invasive and can be performed more easily than other technical tests. CVD affected animals easily change their condition by anesthesia and surgical invasion. Pay attention to arterial blood gas and proper respond to their condition are important for research. This data may facilitate human research and aid in the management and veterinary care of nonhuman primates.

Prosthetic heart valve replacement is the main treatment for valvular heart disease, but the existing artificial valves (mechanical or biological valve) have inherent disadvantages. Patients with mechanical valves require lifelong anticoagulation because of the high risk of thromboembolism, while the durability of biological valve is poor, which easily leads to calcification or lobular degeneration. Besides, they all lack the abilities of self‐repair and growth which are very important for adolescent patients with valvular heart disease. To overcome these shortcomings, the researchers developed tissue engineered heart valves (TEHV) with self‐repairing and remodeling capabilities, low immunogenicity, and great durability. The preparation of three‐dimensional porous scaffolds is the key step in the success of TEHV. Because of their easy processing, active chemical properties, great mechanical properties and controllable degradation rate, synthetic biodegradable polymers are widely used in the preparation of TEHV scaffolds. This review summarizes the types, properties and process techniques of biodegradable synthetic polymers, such as polycaprolactone, polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxyalkanoates currently used to prepare the TEHV scaffolds. This review also focuses on the composite methods and performance of synthetic polymer‐based composite scaffolds. The prospects and challenges of the clinical application for minimally invasive implantation of TEHV are also discussed.

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of successful percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV) on left ventricular systolic functions using strain and strain rate echocardiography in moderate-severe mitral stenosis (MS) patients with normal left ventricular systolic function confirmed by conventional echocardiography. Materials and methods: Patients with moderate-severe MS who had undergone successful PMBV were included. Conventional echocardiographic parameters were evaluated before and after PMBV. Peak systolic strain and strain rate values of basal, mid, and apical segments of the left ventricular anterior, inferior, septum, and lateral walls were determined. Results: After PMBV, significant decreases were determined in the peak and mean gradients of the mitral valve and pulmonary artery pressure, but a significant increase in the mitral valve area. Significant increases (improvement) were determined in the peak systolic strain and strain rate in the basal, mid, and apical segments of the left ventricular septum, lateral, anterior, and inferior walls and in the left ventricular global peak systolic strain (-17.32 ± 0.58% vs.-12.38 ± 1.06%) and strain rate (-1.65 ± 0.07 vs.-1.22 ± 0.12). Conclusion: Strain and strain rate echocardiography can be used for quantitative evaluation of the effect of PMBV on the left ventricular systolic functions in moderate-severe MS patients.
