Valuing SF-6D Health States Using a Discrete Choice Experiment

Abstract: s. DCEs can be used to investigate preferences for health profiles and to estimate utility weights for multi-attribute utility instruments. Australian cost-utility analyses can now use domestic SF-6D weights. The comparability of DCE results to those using other elicitation methods for estimating utility weights for quality-adjusted life-year calculations should be further investigated.

“…Other studies in this area have used similar numbers of choice sets and produced logically consistent models. [6][7][8]11 Regarding aim 2, the model estimated on the non-zero prior value design data was more inconsistent than the model estimated using the zero prior value data, with less precise coefficient estimates. To our knowledge this is the first comparison of zero and non-zero prior value designs using DCE TTO , and the findings are unexpected, since the introduction of the non-zero prior values should, in theory, improve the precision of the parameter estimates.…”

“…It is based on mathematical psychology and was originally applied in the marketing area. Since then, DCE has been used for eliciting preferences of individuals in other academic areas such as transportation and environmental economics and more recently in health (Earl & Kemp, 1999;Kenny et al, 2003;Lancsar & Louviere, 2008;Norman et al, 2013).…”

“…A DCE typically involves the choice of two scenarios, where each scenario is described using a selected level for each attribute. These methods have been used in the past to value processes of care, and more recent research has used DCE to value classification systems of health, to generate preference based-measures, by anchoring the modelled latent values onto the 0-1 scale required for QALYs through the inclusion of an additional attribute for duration (17)(18)(19)(20)(21), often called DCE TTO . DCE with a duration attribute, DCE TTO , was selected in this study to enable the estimation of utility values for each state defined by the classification system that can be used to generate QALYs..…”

“…The duration levels were selected as 1 year, 4 years, 7 years and 10 years, since these have been successfully used in previous DCE TTO valuation surveys of the SF-6Dv2 and EQ-5D valuation (21). Since it was infeasible to value all possible combinations of health states, NGene software was used to select a subset of profiles using D-optimal methods (22) to produce a design that would enables estimation of a pre-specified regression model with precision for each parameter.…”
