Values for tissue magnesium as a guide in detecting magnesium deficiency

Abstract: SYNOPSIS A large-scale survey of the normal magnesium content of various human tissues was carried out to facilitate clinical detection of magnesium deficiency, especially occult deficiency.A review of the literature favours the magnesium content of skeletal muscle as the most reliable index of the body's store of magnesium. There is a significant difference (P < 0 001) in both the serum and erythrocyte magnesium levels between normal pregnant women in the third trimester and the average normal population. The … Show more

“…It was shown in the human that the serum Mg concentration is significantly decreased during the third trimester of pregnancy (LIM et a!.,1969). It was argued that Mg deficiency may be the cause of spasmophilic gravid uterus, and administration of Mg reduces uterine hyperexcitability (AIKAWA, 1981).…”

“…In the estimation of serum ultrafiltrable magnesium, the method of preparing serum ultrafiltrate previously described was used [10]. Skeletal muscle and erythrocyte magnesium were estimated as previously described [9]. Bone magnesium was estimated in the same way as for skeletal muscle magnesium.…”

“…Muscle Mg concentration is considered as a good indicator for Mg status (Lim et al, 1969;Dyckner and Wester, 1985). Muscle Mg is lost during Mg deprivation (Drenick et al, 1969;Wallach, 1988;Lukaski and Nielsen, 2002) and an average of 15% of skeletal-muscle Mg can become available for extracellular buffering (Wallach, 1988).…”

“…Consequently, a much lower dose can be administered by injection over a few minutes in an ambulatory setting. For validation, muscle Mg concentration was used as the accepted reference technique, being a reliable indicator for Mg status (Lim et al, 1969;Dyckner and Wester, 1985).…”
