Values exchange: using online technology to raise awareness of values and ethics in radiography education

Abstract: IntroductionEthics and values are increasingly significant aspects of patient‐centred healthcare. While it is widely agreed that ethics and values are essential for healthcare delivery, there is also an acknowledgement that these are areas that are challenging to teach. The purpose of this study is to report a small‐scale evaluative research project of a web‐based technology with the educational potential to facilitate learning in relation to ethics, values, self‐reflection and peer‐based learning.MethodsFive … Show more

“…The VX has been collecting data about healthcare decision-making for over 16 years and hosts over half a million unique responses to dilemmas, many of which are in the public domain. The VX has been used in education internationally for teaching and assessment of values-based decision-making (Godbold and Lees, 2013, 2016; McInerney and Lees, 2018) and for research (Wright-St Clair and Newcombe, 2014). It has proved to be a reliable and easily accessible on-line forum for ethical debate.…”

“…Former studies on radiography students' learning have focused on how learned theoretical knowledge in form of values and ethics (Mc Inerney & Lees, 2018) and patient/practitioner interactions was used in practice. Such a focus could be seen as a traditional view of the learning of professional knowledge as the acquisition of theoretical knowledge that is then to be transferred and applied to work within a professional practice (Hager & Hodkinson, 2011).…”

“…Despite consensus regarding the importance, goals and outcomes of ethics education, ethics curricula continue to present challenges for educators to teach and evaluate (McInerney and Lees 2018). Educators typically adopt one of two approaches to ethics education (Godbold and Lees 2013): primarily, there is an outcome-based approach whereby students' learning is evaluated by the degree to which their responses align with decisions that an educator, as 'expert', has predetermined as appropriate for a scenario; alternatively, process-oriented approaches focus less upon arriving at the right solution and more upon reasoning strategies that engage students in critical analysis and reflection.…”
